A brief hello.
For anyone finding their way over from my Ventura County Star blog, welcome. I was laid off today — in some ways not that surprised, and in some ways shocked. Shocked mostly that it was today.
I’ll have a bit more to say about this as soon as I sort out my feelings, so please check back. One of the many bad things about today was that I didn’t get to write any kind of a proper farewell column. I’m sure I’ll be doing something along those lines shortly.
Thanks for checking in.

[...] David has blogged about his demise on his personal site. Which won’t load for me here in the United Arab Emirates, but perhaps it will for you. His blog is davidlassen.com, if you’d like to go at in that direction. [...]

David,
I’m sickened. I was so hopeful you had escaped the madness, the severe cuts seeming to have ebbed. I would love to offer insight words of advice based on experience, but I think in many ways, this is different for each of us. You know it’s not personal, know it’s money and the times and all, but still know you’re unemployed. As best you can, try not to let the emotions get the best of you.
I have every confidence you will emerge better off from this. Please reach out when you’re ready.
Your friend,
Steve

Trust me, you’re in a better place. I took a buyout / early retirement Sept. 1, 2008, and the experience has added years to my life.

I go back to the place where I spent 35 years from time to time and it’s like a depressing ghost town. Folks who used to be gung ho and excited about their jobs look like the walking dead.
